Ein Vektor lässt sich je nach Basis unterschiedlich darstellen. Nehmen wir beispielsweise den Vektor \( \begin{pmatrix} 2 \\ 1 \end{pmatrix} \) aus dem \( \mathbb{R}^2\).
Zur Basis \(B= (\begin{pmatrix} 1 \\ 0 \end{pmatrix}, \begin{pmatrix} 1 \\ 1 \end{pmatrix}) \) können wir diesen Vektor darstellen als \( \begin{pmatrix} 2 \\ 1 \end{pmatrix} = 1 \begin{pmatrix} 1 \\ 0 \end{pmatrix} + 1 \begin{pmatrix} 1 \\ 1 \end{pmatrix} \). Diese Darstellung ist eindeutig. Und das motiviert die Definition eines Koordinatenvektors bezüglich \(B\). Wir schreiben \( \begin{pmatrix} 2 \\ 1 \end{pmatrix}_B = \begin{pmatrix} 1 \\ 1 \end{pmatrix} \).
Bezüglich einer anderen Basis ist die Darstellung in der Regel anders. Zur Basis \(E= (\begin{pmatrix} 0 \\ 1 \end{pmatrix}, \begin{pmatrix} 1 \\ 2 \end{pmatrix}) \) wäre die Darstellung beispielsweise \( \begin{pmatrix} 2 \\ 1 \end{pmatrix} = -3 \begin{pmatrix} 0 \\ 1 \end{pmatrix} + 2 \begin{pmatrix} 1 \\ 2 \end{pmatrix} \). Wir schreiben \( \begin{pmatrix} 2 \\ 1 \end{pmatrix}_E = \begin{pmatrix} -3 \\ 2 \end{pmatrix} \).
Entsprechend können wir nun eine lineare Abbildung über ihr Verhalten auf Koordinatenvektoren charakterisieren. Nehmen wir beispielsweise die Abbildung \(f(v) = 2v \). Dann könnte man sich jetzt die Frage stellen: Wenn ich einen Vektor in der Basis \(B\) darstelle, wie sieht dann die Darstellung von \(f(v)\) in der Basis \(E\) aus?
Wir haben oben ja schon gesehen, dass \( \begin{pmatrix} 2 \\ 1 \end{pmatrix}_B = \begin{pmatrix} 1 \\ 1 \end{pmatrix} \) gilt. Nun ist \( f\begin{pmatrix} 2 \\ 1 \end{pmatrix} = 2 \begin{pmatrix} 2 \\ 1 \end{pmatrix} = \begin{pmatrix} 4 \\ 2 \end{pmatrix} = -6 \begin{pmatrix} 0 \\ 1 \end{pmatrix} + 4 \begin{pmatrix} 1 \\ 2 \end{pmatrix} \) und somit \( f\begin{pmatrix} 2 \\ 1 \end{pmatrix}_E = \begin{pmatrix} -6 \\ 4 \end{pmatrix} \).
\(f\) schickt also den Koordinatenvektor \( \begin{pmatrix} 1 \\ 1 \end{pmatrix} \) auf den Koordiantenvektor \( \begin{pmatrix} -6 \\ 4 \end{pmatrix} \). Wir können auch eine interessante Beziehung zwischen diesen Vektoren feststellen. Es gilt nämlich \( \begin{pmatrix} -4 & -2 \\ 2 & 2 \end{pmatrix} \begin{pmatrix} 1 \\ 1 \end{pmatrix} = \begin{pmatrix} -6 \\ 4 \end{pmatrix} \).
Tatsächlich schickt \(f\) einen Koordinatenvektor \( \begin{pmatrix} x_1 \\ x_2 \end{pmatrix}_B \) immer auf einen Koordinatenvektor \( \begin{pmatrix} y_1 \\ y_2 \end{pmatrix}_E \) mit \( \begin{pmatrix} -4 & -2 \\ 2 & 2 \end{pmatrix} \begin{pmatrix} x_1 \\ x_2 \end{pmatrix}_B = \begin{pmatrix} y_1 \\ y_2 \end{pmatrix}_E \). Dies motiviert die Definition einer Darstellungsmatrix von \(f\) bezüglich der Basen \(B\) und \(E\). Wir schreiben in diesem Fall \( M_E^B (f) = \begin{pmatrix} -4 & -2 \\ 2 & 2 \end{pmatrix} \).
Allgemein ist für eine lineare Abbildung \(f\) die Darstellungsmatrix \( M_E^B (f) \) definiert durch die Gleichung
\( M_E^B (f) \ v_B = f(v)_E \)
Die Kurzschreibweise \( M_E^B \) steht in der Regel für \( M_E^B(id) \). Da die Identität jeden Vektor festlässt, sagt einem die Matrix \( M_E^B \) also einfach nur wie man von einem Koordinatenvektor bezüglich \(B\) zu einem Koordinatenvektor bezüglich \(E\) kommt. Man nennt diese Matrix daher auch Basiswechselmatrix.
